The cut matters more than the letter
Two dresses in the same size can fit very differently depending on how they are made. This is the most useful thing to know before you choose.
Bodycon. Cut close and designed to follow the body. It relies on stretch rather than on seaming. If you are between sizes, size up for comfort or stay at your usual size for the intended fit.
A-line. Fitted through the bodice and then opening out from the waist. Choose by how the top half fits; the skirt will take care of itself.
Shirred and elasticised. Dresses with a shirred bust, an elasticised waistband or a smocked bodice adapt across a wider range than a fixed seam does. Your usual size is normally right.
Wrap and faux wrap. A true wrap ties to fit, so it is the most forgiving thing here. A faux wrap looks the same but does not adjust, so treat it as a fixed size.
Knit. Ribbed knit dresses stretch in both directions and recover. They tend to run closer to the body than a woven dress of the same size.
Straps and necklines
Dresses with thin adjustable straps let you set the length at the shoulder. Wide non-adjustable straps and fixed halternecks do not, so the size decides the fit.
